The K-Lite Codec Pack is a free collection of codecs and related tools. Codec is short for Compressor-decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. The very user-friendly installation is fully customizable, which means that you can install only those components that you want.
There are three versions of the K-Lite Codec Pack: The Basic version contains only the most essential codecs and related tools. The Standard version contains everything what is needed to play all the commonly used formats. The Full version contains even more codecs and also has encoding support. The Corporate version is a special version for use in a corporate environment.
The text in black applies to the Full, Standard and Basic versions, the text in green applies to the Full and Standard versions and the text in red applies to the Full version only.
Feature descriptions:
- Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 is a full-featured player which has internal decoding support for DVD, MPEG-2, MP2, MP3, AC3 and DTS. It also has internal support for opening Matroska and Ogg containers. Media Player Classic (MPC) is also capable of playing QuickTime and RealMedia content if those codecs are installed.
- FFDShow revision 1872 is a DirectShow decoding filter for decoding various audio and video formats like DivX, XviD, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263, H.264, MJPEG, CinePack, TrueMotion, DV, ASV1, ASV2, VCR1, VP3, Huffyuv, Theora, AAC, AC3, DTS, MP2, MP3, MP4 and TrueAudio. When using FFDShow you don't need to install separate decoders for these formats. FFDShow is based on the original DirectShow filter from XviD for decompressing movies with a rich set of video postprocessing filters. For video decompression it uses the libavcodec from the ffmpeg project and to enhance visual quality of low bitrate movies it uses the postprocessing code from mplayer. FFDShow can also be used as a separate postprocessing filter for other decoders. Features of FFDShow include: Fast video decompression using optimized code for MMX (MultiMedia eXtensions), SSE (Streaming SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) Extensions), SSE2 and SSE3 on Intel (Integrated Electronics) Pentium processors and on AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) Athlon processors also 3DNow!, Support for a lot of different codecs, Image postprocessing for higher playback quality, Automatic quality control: it reduces the postprocessing level when the CPU (Central Processing Unit) load is high, Hue, saturation and luminance correction, Sharpening filter, Presets, Support for various subtitle formats and FFDShow is completely free and Open Source under the restrictions of the GPL (General Public License)
- XviD Decoding 1.2.0-dev build 2008-01-10 is required for playing XviD movies. XviD is currently the most popular format.
- XviD Encoding 1.2.0-dev build 2008-01-10 is required for encoding movies in the XviD format.
- DivX Decoding 6.8.0.0 is required for playing DivX movies.
- DivX Encoding 6.8.0.0 is required for encoding movies in the DivX format.
- Windows Media VCM 9.0.1.1184 is required for playing Windows Media 9 movies and audio.
- On2 VP6 Decoding 6.4.2.0 is required for playing VP6 movies. These are not very common.
- On2 VP6 Encoding 6.4.2.0 is required for encoding movies in the VP6 format.
- On2 VP7 Decoding 7.0.10.0 is required for playing VP7 movies. These are not very common.
- On2 VP7 Encoding 7.0.10.0 is required for encoding movies in the VP7 format.
- Intel Indeo 5.2562.15.54 is required for playing movies that have the Indeo 5 format.
- Intel Indeo 4.51.16.2 is required for playing movies that have the Indeo 4 format.
- Intel Indeo 3.24.15.03 is required for playing movies that have the Indeo 3 format.
- Intel I.263 2.55.1.16 is required for playing movies that have the I.263 format.
- Huffyuv 2.1.1 CCE Patch 0.2.5 is required for playing and encoding movies that have the Huffyuv format. Huffyuv is a lossless (no quality loss) video compression format.
- Elecard MPEG-2 demuxer 1.0.31.51211 or MainConcept MPEG-2 demuxer 1.0.0.54 or Ligos MPEG-2 demuxer 4.0.0.77. Windows already has a MPEG-2 demuxer (splitter) so normally you won't need one of these.
- Ligos MPEG-2 decoder 4.0.0.77 or Cyberlink MPEG-2 decoder 6.0.0.1402 or MainConcept MPEG-2 decoder 1.0.0.56. Required for playing MPEG-2 movies. Ligos and MainConcept will also decode MPEG-2 audio streams. Not required if you use Media Player Classic, because it has native MPEG-2 decoding support.
- Fraunhofer MP3 DirectShow decoder 1.9.0.311 is required for playing movies that have a MP3 audio stream.
- AC3 DirectShow decoder (AC3Filter) 1.46 is required for playing movies that have an AC3 audio stream.
- AC3 ACM decoder 1.4 is required for playing movies that have an AC3 audio stream in applications like VirtualDub.
- Ogg Vorbis DirectShow decoder (CoreVorbis) 1.1.0.79 is required for playing movies that have an Ogg Vorbis audio stream.
- AAC DirectShow decoder (CoreAAC) 1.2.0.575 is required for playing movies that have an AAC audio stream.
- MusePack DirectShow decoder 1.0.0.4 is required for playing MusePack audio files.
- Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder 1.00 is required for playing Monkey's audio files (.ape). Monkey's Audio is a lossless (no quality loss) audio compression format.
- WavPack DirectShow decoder (CoreWavPack) 1.1.1 is required for playing WavPack audio files.
- FLAC DirectShow decoder (CoreFLAC) 0.73.1936 is required for playing FLAC audio files. FLAC is a lossless (no quality loss) audio compression format.
- Voxware MetaSound DirectShow decoder 1.0.0.12 is required for playing movies that have a Voxware MetaSound audio stream.
- DivX ;) Audio 4.2.0.0 is required for playing some DivX 3.11 movies.
- LAME MP3 ACM 3.97 is required for encoding MP3 streams and files.
- MP4 DirectShow splitter 1.7.401.3 is required for opening audio and video streams in a MP4 container (.mp4 files). Works only in combination with FFDShow.
- Ogg Vorbis DirectShow splitter 0.9.9.5 is required for opening audio and video streams in an Ogg Vorbis container (.ogm and .ogg files). Not required if you use Media Player Classic to play these types of files, because it has native OGM decoding support.
- Ogg Vorbis DLLs 1.1.1 are required for opening audio and video streams in an Ogg Vorbis container (.ogm files). Not required if you use Media Player Classic to play these types of files, because it has native OGM decoding support.
- Matroska DirectShow splitter 1.7.401.3 is required for opening audio and video streams in a Matroska container (.mkv and .mka files). Not required if you use Media Player Classic to play these types of files, because it has native Matroska decoding support.
- Matroska DirectShow splitter 1.0.3.0 can be used to mux audio and video streams into a Matroska container.
- DirectVobSub (VSFilter) 2.33 is a tool for displaying subtitles. Your subtitle files should have the same filename as your video file (for example MovieName.avi, MovieName.idx and MovieName.sub) and should be in the same folder (directory) as your video file. Then the subtitles will automatically be displayed in most players.
- DirectVobSub (VSFilter) 2.38 is a tool for displaying subtitles. Your subtitle files should have the same filename as your video file (for example MovieName.avi, MovieName.idx and MovieName.sub) and should be in the same folder (directory) as your video file. Then the subtitles will automatically be displayed in most players. Use the older version if you have problems with this version.
- SHOUTcast Source 1.0.0.1 can be used to play SHOUTcast streams in any DirectShow enabled player.
- Morgan Multimedia Stream Switcher 0.9.9 can be used to switch between audio streams in a video file that has multiple audio streams. These types of video files are not very common. Not required if you use Media Player Classic or BSplayer, because they have native support for multiple audio streams. Only install this when you really need it.
- GSpot Codec Information Appliance 2.70a is a tool that can tell you exactly which codecs are needed to play a certain video file. This is very helpful when you have troubles playing a video file.
- VobSubStrip 0.11 is a tool which can strip languages from VobSub subtitle files (.idx and .sub files).
- GraphEdit build 061102 is a visual tool for building and testing DirectShow filter graphs.
- AVI Fixed 2.0 beta 1 can rebuild the index section of .avi files. This can make files with broken frames playable. In some cases it will also solve synchronisation problems and incorrectly displayed movie lengths.
- The FourCC (Four Character Code) Changer is a program for changing the FourCC of a video file, which is used to identify which codec should be used to decode the file. This power tool is for expert users only.
- Bitrate Calculator can be used to calculate the bitrate to use when encoding a movie.
